Remember the old A&W root beer stand? How about the Lake Erie Drive-In? Hear stories and see old photos of the restaurants of Vermilion's past - and share your own memories too - at a special program at Ritter Public Library Monday, March 9 at 7 pm.

The monthly Archival Society meeting takes place at 7 pm in the Community Room of the Ritter Public Library. The subject this time is "Places We Dined", a continuation of the 2020 calendar of the same name. Come and re-live the memories of past favorite restaurants... maybe even share some of your memories that others haven't yet heard.

Ritter Public Library is located at 5680 Liberty Avenue in downtown Vermilion, Ohio.

Archival Society Meets

The Vermilion Area Archival Society meets on November 4, 2019 at 7 pm at Ritter Public Library in the Community Room. Local businessman and boat builder, Tom Moes, will present a power point presentation on a book written in 1832 by a British minister who lived in the Vermilion area for two years. Moes will also present interesting items about Vermilion from 1800 to 1920.

Vermilion Area Archival Society meetings are free and open to the public.

Archival Society Receives Mylander Foundation Grant

The Vermilion Area Archival Society has received a grant from the Mylander Foundation in the amount of $2,478.00. The purpose of the grant was to develop a website for the non-profit organization to benefit Erie County residents and visitors.

The new website, vermilionhistory.org, is now available to the public. The website uses the “Vermilion Historical Society” as an umbrella name for the Archival Society and the Vermilion History Museum and is the only all-in-one resource for researching Vermilion history on the internet.

The Archival Society became a non-profit organization in 2001. For many years the organization has been collecting and archiving Vermilion history into PastPerfect Museum Software. Their collection and computers are located in the basement of the Ritter Public Library which is not open to the public. This website is intended to expand their online presence to a wider audience.

George Mylander of Sandusky, Ohio created The Mylander Foundation in 1987 because he believed that the private foundation concept provided the most positive, farsighted vehicle for the intelligent underwriting of the projects and programs of local charitable, educational, civic, governmental and religious organizations and institutions in a manner that would not be limited to his own lifetime.

Vermilion Area Archival Society Introduces New Website

The Vermilion Area Archival Society, in cooperation with Ritter Public Library and the Vermilion History Museum, videotapes oral histories and offers regular meetings and presentations. Archival Society volunteers scan historic photos, documents, calendars, and newsprint articles into an historical database. Now the public will have access to all that historical information.

Learn how at the September 9, 2019 Archival Society meeting. Historian Janet Ford will present the new website, www.vermilionhistory.org, and explain how to access historical information on it. The website will be updated weekly with local historical information and photographs.

The meeting takes place at 7 pm in the Community Room of Ritter Public Library at 5680 Liberty Avenue in downtown Vermilion. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Flood of 1969 Grand Finale Interview

The Vermilion Area Archival Society will meet on August 12th at 7 pm in the Community Room of the Ritter Public Library. We present the final interviews on the flood of 1969 with Don Parsons of Parsons Marina and Doug Keith, Sr., playing off each other, sharing their memories of the disastrous flood. As usual, this interview will be taped and added to the Society's collection of oral histories. These histories can be found on the Ritter Library website and are maintained in collaboration with the library and the Vermilion History Museum. The meeting is free and open to the public. Name That Person

The Vermilion History Museum needs your help. The Museum is having a “Name That Person” event on Saturday, August 10, 2019 from 11 am to 3 pm in the driveway of the Museum at 727 Grand Street in downtown Vermilion, Ohio.

Rich Tarrant, curator, has uncovered numerous photographs of unknown people and places from the Vermilion News archives and needs help identifying them. Photos are generally from the 1950s.

Come to the Museum for an hour or so to reminisce, view and help identify the old-time photos. You are also encouraged to bring your Vermilion photos.

The South Shore Four Barbershop Quartet will be performing from 11 am to noon, and from 1 pm to 2 pm, for your enjoyment. Bring a chair.

Tour the Museum to see what is new on display. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
